"Creating a culture of burnout is opposite to creating a culture of sustainable creativity. This is something that needs to be taught in business schools. This mentality needs to be introduced as a leadership and performance-enhancing tool." - Arianna Huffington

"Work, work, work, work, work." These lyrics by Rihanna are what come to mind when I think of entrepreneurial burnout. Consistently on the grind 24/7, 7/24, all day everyday, to make your dream and vision come to life so that you can impact your community and the world. Being an entrepreneur is extremely tough, and you have to work and think in capacities that the majority of the time goes way beyond a job. You have to wear multiple hats in order to be able to accomplish your goals and meet your deadlines. Being an entrepreneur has definitely been the most difficult thing endeavour I have set to do within my life because there are so many risks involved that you have to mitigate in order for you to become successful. Also, you must be motivated, dedicated, committed, and determined to make your dream and vision come to a reality!

Now let's go into the definition of burnout and how this can affect us as entrepreneurs. Burnout according to this article by help guide is "a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress." https://www.helpguide.org/articles/stress/burnout-prevention-and-recovery.htm). Therefore as entrepreneurs there are many signs and symptoms which could be happening that can indicate that we are about to burnout, here's a list below.

  • Irritability

  • Weakened Immune System

  • Exhaustion

  • Increased Forgetfulness

These are all factors which are signs of burnout and it's important as entrepreneurs, despite our passion, our motivation and drive to be able to make great products or services to impact the world to be able to take time to figure out the root cause of our burnout and stress. Introspection is a vital piece to preventing burnout because it enables you to become self-aware of your issues. Introspection by definition is to examine one's own thoughts and feelings to be able to understand where you stand in the present moment. Burnout can secretly come upon you and by being introspective you can understand where the source of your stress is coming from in order to stop it from flowing to you. This will allow you to have more repose, relaxation, and eventually lead to you being stress free.
