Stress Management: Laughter

Laughter and joy brings you relief, teaching you that happiness is a choice and a belief.

Smiling, laughing, bringing joy to the heart, is one of the greatest medicines that has been around since the beginning of time. When you laugh and have fun, your able to relieve tension instantly, and feel the effects automatically. Laughter is a catalyst for so many positive outcomes whether socially, physically, emotionally, spiritually, or even mentally. I personally, love making jokes and making people laugh, it's one of my favourite things to do. Without laughter in my life, I don't think I would've been able to make nearly as much friends and impact as many lives as I have.

When it comes to science, according to Mayo Clinic, (, laughter has various positive benefits, such as,

  • Stimulate many organs. Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.

  • Activate and relieve your stress response. A rollicking laugh fires up and then cools down your stress response, and it can increase and then decrease your heart rate and blood pressure. The result? A good, relaxed feeling.

  • Soothe tension. Laughter can also stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation, both of which can help reduce some of the physical symptoms of stress.

There are so many benefits to laughter, I remember being in various stressful situations and heartbreaks, but then a friend or family member makes me laugh and all of a sudden I just begin to feel relieved at ease and in peace. As you laugh more, your heart enlarges, lung capacity grows, and you have a higher sense of well being about yourself. One example, I have about the power of laughter and relieving stress is whenever I first did my RKease workshop with Leap Junction in the winter time.

During the wintertime, I was able to do my workshop for the first time with Leap Junction and it was amazing! The fact that I was able to create a concept and execute it with a group of people for the first time brought so much pride and joy to my heart. I didn't know what to expect with this workshop, but when I did it, it gave me a glimmer of hope for the future that this business can be effective one day. One of the main reasons, I believed it is because of how much we laughed during the jingle creation exercise. Everyone enjoyed each other's company and smiled the whole way through. It was the exact reason why I figured that laughter is a cure to so many symptoms stress accumulates. Kelsey Currie pictured on the right corner, told me that it was extremely fun and she thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. Overall laughter is one of the greatest tools for stress management and whenever you have humour it changes your perception, perspective, and view on whatever situation that arises, so that your able to endure it and not succumb to it.
