"We are all storytellers. We all live in a network of stories. There isn't a stronger connection between people than storytelling." - Jimmy Neil Smith
Wow!! I can't believe, I have gotten all the way here with my business, with my idea, and the statement is so true when they say starting a business is like raising a child. It's been an up and down journey of sheer hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Each and every day, I think about where I am about my business and how much time it has taken to get to this stage!! I just wanted to make this bonus blog, to show my beginnings of how I started and what it took for me to get to this point.
It all started in the winter of 2021, I was at Fanshawe College in the HR program and I was doing some external research on the importance of HR and the role in the workplace. I found so much information such as compensation and benefits, employment law, etc. but the one which was the most intriguing to me was Occupational Health and Safety. Now why was this intriguing to me, and what did I find researching about it. Well, in 2018 I attempted to become a radiologist and due to some sicknesses I wasn't able to finish, but medicine was still a passion of me, especially medical antiquity. So in my free time, I would study various history books concerning different society's medical techniques, such as Roman, Greek, Mayan, Aztec, Persian, etc.
The book which I studied the most was Hippocrates Sacred Disease, which was integral in the medical profession because it was the first piece of literature that altered medical thought from spirituality to more rational medicine. But breaking down Hippocrates book is a whole blog in itself. The most intriguing quote which Hippocrates stated was "as long as the brain has rest, a man enjoys his reason." Meaning as long as your mind is in a state of ease and peace, your logic, executive functioning are all sound. This statement made me intrigued to study the things which made our minds not have ease and what I found out is that one of the leading causes of this was stress. Therefore, I started writing poems in order to try and relieve my stress and stressors of my daily life so I can replicate this and it worked. It was so therapeutic for me, and I was able to even write a poem that was featured in the Interrobang magazine. Then, I started writing some for other people such as friends and family and they enjoyed it.
Fast forward to January, Tech Alliance our regional innovation centre created a program called Elevate Entrepreneurship centred around BIPOC founders, so I figured I might as well join because being an entrepreneur is my dream. Therefore, for five weeks I was able to flesh out my idea, learn from guest speakers, and understand so much entrepreneurial content which was profound. I learned about communications strategy, digital marketing, finance, start-up finance, accounting, etc. All of this education shaped and grew my entrepreneurial mindset and through that it gave me the confidence to go into another business accelerator at Fanshawe College with their entrepreneurial service, Leap Junction.
I am going to write a whole blog on this experience to sum it up. But in 12 weeks, I was able to develop my workshop product, ready to be sold on the market, I made a ton of community connections, and was able to build upon my entrepreneurial knowledge from Elevate Entrepreneurship. Overall, this journey has been amazing and I can't wait to share more. Have a great day, and stay tuned for more blogs next week!! Peace!! :)
