"Social awareness is your ability to accurately pick up on emotions in other people and understand what is really going on with them" - Travis Badberry
In our last topic of emotional intelligence we spoke on the importance of self-awareness and how it makes you more emotional intelligent as well as help reduce stress and enhances your ability for stress management. Today we will speak on social awareness and how its a component of emotional intelligence, how it helps with personal development, reduce stress, and a form of stress management.
Social awareness by definition is the "ability for a person to consider the perspectives of other individuals, groups, or communities, and apply that understanding to interactions with them." This component of emotional intelligence is crucial especially in terms of building community, being empathetic, and working with different people within your organisation. There are many skills that can be practised to develop social awareness, such as
Identifying social cues (verbal, physical) to determine how others feel.
Taking others' perspectives.
Demonstrating empathy and compassion.
Showing concern for the feelings of others.
Understanding and expressing gratitude.
Recognizing strengths in others.
Identifying diverse social norms, including unjust ones
Recognising situational demands and opportunites
Caring about and being motivated to contribute to the well-being of one's family, friends, school, community, the environment, and the greater good
Now how does social awareness correlate to stress management. When you have great relationships with people and your community members, whenever you're in a tough situation that can bring you a lot of stress, you can lean on them for support. You can set up times to meet up with your friends, family, or even acquaintances and have a one on one or have a meeting just so you can air out what's going on deep inside. This will help relieve your tension, make you feel relieved and relaxed and less burdened, so you can go throughout the rest of the day stress free. Also by building relationships it takes your mind off stressful situations, ideas, or events because you are in the present moment with whomever your in a conversation or an activity with and that extremely lowers stress.
Overall social awareness is you are able to generate as well sustain relationships with your friends and community members, so it's vital to be cognisant of this and keep going so that you can be able to have a meaningful and impactful life. Therefore it's important to have social awareness and continue to grow it in order to not only be a positive member of society, but to help reduce you stress and manage it as well as we stated above. With that being said, I hope you enjoyed my blog, stay tuned for next week!! Peace!! :)
